does that mean i have to read it in that order?
posted by direcow at 1/31/2003 08:18:00 AM
but in this context wouldn't it be different? but i guess it means your patience is... slow. From dictionary.com, it seems laconic, at it's best sense, just means stoic or something like that... it can even be brusque. Pete: you being brusque?
also: Was reading the entire Q&A section at jonathancarroll.com
he recommends: China Mellville's Perdido Street Station. Intrigued, will pick it up one day.
says of Haruki Murakami: I like some of his works, but his main characters tend to have the same voice
says also to read instead of harry potter: Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials.
lotsa things to gleam from there.... and he's funny as hell. That'll be the rest of my day.

1) I'm glad to have caused some pain, and to see you bounce back up. But what are you going to do... ah, there's always ICQ phone. Not always a good thing, but then again, Dale's not a good testament for anything.
I still don't see it as real neglect... just lack of choice. But catching up is good I guess. I have lotsa catching up to do myself. However, video editing, downloading and colouring AND ESPECIALLY reading does currently pose a very nice distraction of which I'm happy to be experiencing. Ah, reading. It's orgasmic.
I know how it was like? I dunno, I don't even recall being in my shoes. Serious. Therefore, lack of hindsight on hindsight.
Hmz, and yes, strangely enough this page has had the thumbs up. Good job everyone. Let's try to keep it moving no matter how slowly. One reason I want to keep it moving is cos in July/August, we have UNIVERSITY. Now's the best time to do something as time consuming. That, and our lease is currently up in April. Do we move? Do we stay? Wassup? Do we stop? And seriously, rush job or not, the writing should be able to holding the strip up, and I bet pete has thing's planned. I mean, crap like Okashi whatever survived while looking like crap.
Pete: one thing.... will you convert to Islam if needed? And yes, the shoes always end up somehow with the other person. Odd indeed. Love is like Kueh Lapis is it not?
Laconic. Gotta check that word up. Vocab is limited indeed.

Heh... I'm cool with it... I'm having an email relationship with a 17-year-old Malay girl and I have no idea where we're headed, but she seems really desperate and ironically, that means I have to be the one to temper her enthusiasm with laconic patience. *sigh*
There... told two more people. Keeping stuff to yourself is hard. I think 3 people knowing is good enough.
Comic... well, I'd hate to disappoint our readers, but truly, it's no fun doing something when your heart's not in it as much as it used to be. We'll set more realistic datelines (i.e. none) and Alvin will just have to tweak his signature appropriately. Funny thing though... People seem to think there was a marked improvement in the latest strip, although I do recall Wailiong admitting he did a rush job. Congratulations to all, anyway.

we are no longer on hiatus.
there has been about a month and a half since the last strip proper, and more than a month since the Christmas special wailiong did... which means that there has been more than enough time to catch up.
Upwards and onwards!
Strip will be up tomorrow.
And story has been updated.

Oh... heh. Didn't know. Ah well.
The Story Thus Far:
Ben, lost in thought, finds himself standing outside a church, he goes in and soon starts dreaming of a better time, with his girlfriend Lydia.
We cut to a dark office, where a mysterious stranger has procured a hostage... Ben's girlfriend.
Ben wakes up the next morning, a Sunday, to discover that several members of the congregation have found him. Fortunately, the rector of the parish, a James Cross, takes care of him and dresses his wound.
We are treated to a shot (pun not intended) of a lone gunman, who swears to protect Father James, for a reason yet unknown. The gunman gets into position in the Church's upper level, overlooking the altar.
James is giving the sermon when he is shot suddenly...
...which brings us to the present.

Because if we're going to introduce colour all of a sudden... it might not sit well with our audience.

Random comments:
1. I still think we shouldn't have used the Chinese (read: no dreadlocks) James Cross. Ah well. =)
2a. Have I grown thinner in the sketch of the three of us? Wow. How appropriate. I've lost 3 kg over the past 2 days (thanks to the stomach flu) and I'm now a svelte 78kg. Okay, maybe not svelte.
2b. Wai, your right hand in the sketch looks AMAZINGLY big. Too much pocket billards? =P
3. Bishi looks unique! Great job! Don't like all the "bandages", though.
4. Benwaiting - I'll go with benwaiting1 and original benwaiting... but 1 takes precedence.

I don't like the first cross cos it's a little crooked. (comics sans ms)... if i sharpen the other t is it ok?
second pic.. I need a much better quote. Not nice.. :(
any ideas?

Jars of Clay! w00t!
I prefer the one on the left. The "blurred" cross seems too subliminal for its own good.
Oh, and doesn't James look drastically different now? =P This is the Chinese James Cross, not Joshua's twin brother.
And the second pic looks good. I'll try to work towards that as the ending page.
Thanks, Alvin.

NO VOLCANO HIGH. Try to tread on the grounds of common sense... volcano high... isn't. I don't mind ben being werewolf at all, cos if your worry is that the audience won't get it, then why pander to them? you did say (paraphrased) that it was your pet project, something personal, so i guess whether they understand that a garou isn't a bishi per se isn't really the point. i'd like you to go back to the roots of the story... found that bit the coolest. when ben became human... i was actually disappointed.
I'd agree that the nudity isn't that much of a plus point, but i haven't seen a nude girl for ages now, and *phew*!
I dunno... i find Saiyuki to be some sort of.. subset of genericness of animeness. But then again, i never really looked close and hard at it.
posted by direcow at 1/11/2003 08:05:00 AM
Hmmm... Maybe it's genetic, maybe it's cynicism, but her face is but (no pun intended) the only attractive part of the pic. She's gorgeous, but the fact that she's nude has nothing to do with it.
I more or less guessed "girl" actually, but I never thought it was Grace. She seems like an amazing person, Wai... you lucky dog, you.
Have I mentioned how much I love Justice? She's got the whole Saiyuki feel, but her jaw's a lot stronger than the typical male. It's a very strong juxtaposition compared to the traditional depiction of Justice, which wields a sword. I think you've got one helluva concept there, Wai...
Which reminds me... question for story. Should vampires be as supernatural as Sound of Silence gets? Or should I push the limits and turn it into Volcano High?

hmz... i'm never sure if i'm a hair man, an eye man, a shoulder man, a breast man or a butt man.
but sure, i'll be a butt man just for this while. hmz... would be that that butt is inspired? but i wouldn't say that, lest i be a broken man.
WWL: And WWW knows cos you told him. Word gets around. Sorry tho, but you know I happen to talk to sam once in a while, and sometimes, on those azure mooned days, you might pop up in conversation.
Pete: Just make sure you write those ideas down ok? And keep that drive, we might be slowing and bumbling around, but you gotta push on before the story really leaves your mind.
I notice some layering problems in justice, is that inherent from source?

Woooo! Fan-art! He's a little too buff to be Ben, though.... I still prefer Wailiong's concept.
But no, I haven't progressed with story - I have a few more ideas in mind, but nothing concrete. Sorry.
And no, Wai... I have NO IDEA what's happening with your life. It's cute that Alvin, Jack and Sam know but I don't. No worries there... they are your classmates after all. =)
Just tell me if you're comfortable with me know about it (whatever it is), yeah?

i'm not sure if things in your life need fixing, or you're fixing someone else's life, or you're just adding another cog to your endless wheel of perpetual motion.
the thing is, the moment we return, i'd still like to keep it at a good speed. and one thing's for sure, if you don't draw fast enough, pete won't get the impetus to write fast enough. right? pete? did you do any story during your MC?
i must make this point. I am currently still apprehensive. but still, this life is yours, not mine, (whassup (?)) and therefore I shall try to keep mum.
And dad too. My parents are cool.
Oh, and I've told Sam and Jack. That ok? pete deserves to know too I believe, but let my tongue no longer spread the word of what dreams may come, if any at all.
comic priority? not chore?
am still moody... no thanks to a startling dream i had this morning at work. sigh. will post it up once i finish fleshing it out on one of my various rant sites.

update on hiatus, well, you've just given one, so that's cool. I'll move the release of this comic to the 21st then. Should give you plenty of time. Pete, you ok with that?

now as read whole rant, liked this one:
"and recently I've found that i was loosing my grip on the story - when you completely rewrite scripts after all the art is done because it doesn't feel right, it means something isn't right. I took today as a 'In Service' day to sit down and do what I haven't done in four months - write. Hammer out the rest of chapter three, in detail. See how things fit together, see where better ties between things can be made. When I do this, i can add better layers of story and humor to the strips that has be so missing lately."
prior comment kinda out of point.
